Growth Group Homework & Discussion

For the week of June 4, 2017

Review

This weekend we continued with our study about one of the “illustrations of mercy in the New Testament scriptures. It is the story of the Good Samaritan found in Luke 10:25-37. We saw the three pictures of the mercy of men. We understood that, to show mercy like the Good Samaritan, we must seize the moment, serve despite our schedules and spend money where necessary.

Individual Preparation before the Group Meeting

Read Luke 10:25-37 and review your notes or listen to message again.

Group Discussion

  1. If Jesus were telling this parable today in your community, what characters do you think he would use instead of priest, Levite and Samaritan?
  1. Can a person be an effective Christian without helping others?
  2. How can we all express more compassion and care for one another?
  3. What have you learned from this lesson that will help you show mercy just as the Good Samaritan did?

Message Notes

Series Title: MERCY

Review:

  • Three illustrations of the Mercy of Men
    • The Priest - illustrates to us those who see needs but never get involved.
    • The Levite - illustrates to us those who see a need, and are curious about the need but do nothing about it.
    • The Samaritan - illustrates to us those who see a need, get close and do something about it.

  • To show Mercy like the Samaritan, We must
    • Understand that mercy is not only for those we like
    • See the needs of other people
    • Be sympathetic when we see needs

Today’s Message......

To show Mercy like the Samaritan, We must

  • Seize the moment and help

Luke 10:34

The Samaritan went to him, poured olive oil and wine on his wounds, and bandaged them. Then he put the hurt man on his own donkey and took him to an inn where he cared for him. (NCV)

How can we seize the moment and help?

  1. Quit over thinking, ask the right questions, and put yourself in the shoes of that person

Wrong Question

If I stop and help this man, what will happen to me?

Right Question(s):

If I don’t stop to help this man, what will happen to him?

If it were me would I want somebody to intervene?.

  1. Rearrange our schedules

Luke 10:35

The next day, the Samaritan brought out two coins, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of this man. If you spend more money on him, I will pay it back to you when I come again.’ (NCV)

  1. Reallocate our resources

Luke 10:35

The next day, the Samaritan brought out two coins, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of this man. If you spend more money on him, I will pay it back to you when I come again.’ (NCV)

  1. Enlist the support of others

Luke 10:35

The next day, the Samaritan brought out two coins, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of this man. If you spend more money on him, I will pay it back to you when I come again.’ (NCV)

Ephesians 5:16

Use every chance you have for doing good, because these are evil times. (NCV)
